Removal of drain extension pipe at the wall under bathroom sink

0 0

Replacing a vanity with a wall-hung sink does more than bring a fresh, welcome look to your old bathroom. It’s also one of the best ways to make a small bathroom feel roomier.

As the floor space opens up, the room becomes brighter and easier to clean. And it’s the perfect time to update the lights, mirror and perhaps the medicine cabinet as well. The tradeoff, of course, is a loss of storage space. So as part of a bath remodel, consider adding a larger medicine cabinet/mirror, a small freestanding cabinet or even cabinetry or shelving above the toilet to handle the stuff you used to store in the vanity.

In this story, we’ll show you how to install the new wall-hung sink and faucet. Installation is easier than it sounds. We’ll show you the step-by-step techniques to do the whole job in a weekend, or two weekends if you decide to tile behind the sink as we did. However, as in any plumbing project, complications often come up.

Reconnect the water supply lines.

If you have old, faulty water supply valves, you’ll need to replace them. First, turn off the water at the main house valve.

For galvanized steel pipes, hold the pipe with a pipe wrench and use a wrench to unscrew the old valve. Clean the pipe threads, then wrap them with plumber’s tape. To install the new valve, hold the pipe steady with a pipe wrench and tighten the valve into place.

You have several options for replacing fittings on copper and brass pipes. To replace a compression fitting, hold the valve in place with a wrench. With another wrench, unscrew the compression nut. To install a new compression fitting, first clean the pipe. Then slide on the new compression nut and brass ferrule. Apply a little pipe joint compound on the ferrule, position the valve on the pipe and secure it with the compression nut.

A newer type of valve similar to a compression fitting uses special teeth to lock onto the pipe and a rubber...

How to Remove and Clean a Sink Drain Trap

If you are thinking that only a plumber should mess around with those sink drain traps, you should think again! This is a very easy plumbing project that can save you a couple hundred dollars by doing it yourself. It only takes minutes and two very simple steps; place a bucket, and dump debris.

Note: Slip Rings and Slip Nuts are the same part, just called a slightly different name depending on the plumber you talk to.

Step #1

Place a bucket under the plumbing trap to catch any water and junk that may be lurking in the trap elbow. Using channel-style pliers, loosen the slip nuts (see diagram) while holding the trap elbow in place. Finish unscrewing the slip nuts by hand and when possible, slide them away from the pipe connections at both ends of the elbow. Carefully wiggle the elbow free to remove it.

Step #2

Dump out the debris. Poke a small wire brush into the trap elbow to clean it out. Take a...

The J pipe, the lowest portion of pipe shown, keeps sewer gases from rising into your home.

A sink drain is a simple creation. First is a threaded tail piece leaving the bottom of the sink. Next comes an elbow trap — sometimes referred to as a J-bend, which is actually two pieces that attach either to the sink tail piece or to a short slip joint extension on one end and the outside pipe on the other. Then comes the outside pipe, going to the sewer.

The trap catches and holds objects that drop down your sink, like your wedding ring. It also provides easy access to clogs, which tend to form at the bottom of the J instead of further on in your plumbing. Most importantly, it prevents sewage gases from re-entering the house. Age and use can lead to leaking P-traps (one of three types of J-bends) and clogs. Fortunately, replacing the pipe is fairly simple. Does this Spark an idea?

Modern bathroom faucets come in many styles, including long-neck, waterfall and low-arc spouts, and a variety of different finishes.
