How to turn a pump on or off from any of 12 switches

Yes, you use 4-way switches. Here is an animation that shows how they work. You can have as many 4-way switches as you want, in the middle.

Changing the switch causes the pump to change. If it was on, it will be off, or vice versa. The switch position will not tell the user whether it's on or off. If you want that, use switches with a "pilot light" feature.

EDIT: Folding some of my additional comments into my answer.

There are many "smart switches" on the market that can do a lot of things. You may be able to adapt these easily. Some of them even use wireless controls for extra switches, so you don’t have to run wires everywhere.

You could also use pushbuttons (so the pump only runs when a person presses a button). Either the pushbuttons would have to handle a LOT of current… or they could switch a small DC voltage (12 or 24 volts) which would then operate a relay to power the pump. The...

Either one will work.

A solid state relay can be connected directly to the Arduino as long as it's rated for 5V control voltage (very common for SSRs).

Solid state relays are optically isolated and they have an internal LED. Most SSRs have in internal current limiting resistor for the LED, but some require an external resistor so check the specs.

The "output" side of a solid state relay is more critical than a mechanical relay. If you are switching AC, the relay must be rated for switching AC, and if you are switching DC, it must be rated to switch DC. SSRs sometimes have a minimum voltage so a 120/240VAC SSR may not work with 12VAC. Again, check the specs.

I search on web, and found many AC project used Solid State Relay

I think Gordak 952 is a great product. But as engineer, I must add a power off switch. "There are different ways to kill the fleas!" ...the following video is about one of the infinite ways to add a power off switch keeping the cool down function. I though about a more sophisticated electronics design. But thinking about to make a video for you guys, I must keep it "simple and easy" for the beginner ones.
Remember no equipment manufacturer will not pay you for any damage in house or business because a fire. They went for production cost savings. But I will do the most convenient changes for myself.
After engineering designs any equipment, there should be a TEST engineer who will find out any problem and perform the debugging. After them, there should be a New Product Introduction engineer, NPI, who will later become in the Product engineer, and he will have to make the modifications after clients complained. I already saw in Internet forums, people complaining because...

FAQs on how to set the water pump pressure switch cut-in and cut-out pressures

Watch out: SAFETY WARNING OF FATAL SHOCK HAZARD: if you remove the cover of the pump pressure control switch you can get access to the two nuts that adjust the operating pressures of the water pump.

But watch out! There are also live electrical contacts exposed in this area. If you touch them, especially being near water piping, there is a serious risk of death by...

The fuel pump shut off switch is designed to disengage the power to the fuel pump when a vehicle comes to an instant stop. Most vehicles today have an inertia switch near the main air bag module with a reset button. If the fuel pressure switch turns off the power to the fuel pump during normal vehicle operation, then the reset button can be pressed to reset the switch and resume power to the fuel pump.

The fuel cut-off switch is a safety reset switch which starts the fuel pump and allows gas flow to the engine. If you get hit and it is only a minor fender-bender, the fuel pump may shut off; you will know when you try to start the car again and the engine just turns but doesn’t start.

At this point, just hit the reset button and you’re on your way. In the event of a major collision, where the gas line is ruptured, it prevents the fuel pump from spewing gas continuously and increasing the chances of fire or explosion. All vehicles have a reset switch, but most of them...

You’ve scrounged around your growing electronics bin and come up with wires to connect a circuit together and batteries to power the circuit. So how do you turn the power on and off? You use switches and relays.

Turning current on and off with switches

When you move the switch to shut off your flashlight, you disconnect the wires that run from the battery to the light bulb. All switches do the same thing: Connect wires to allow electric current to flow or disconnect wires to stop electric current from flowing.

When you turn off your flashlight, you put the switch in what is called the open position. With the switch in the open position, you have a disconnected wire, and no current can flow. When you turn on the flashlight, you put the switch in the closed position. With the switch in the closed position, you’ve connected the wire (and completed the circuit), and current can flow.

Starting with simple switches

Your flashlight usually comes with...

The original question is:

What is the difference beween "turn off" and "switch off"?

Both terms mean the same thing. The verb "switch" is the counterpart of the noun "switch." A switch is a generic device that diverts the flow of something, in this example electricity, from one path to another, or "on" or "off."

Switches take a number of forms, one of which is rotary; that is, electrical current can be diverted from one path to another, or "on" or "off," by rotating a knob. Other forms are toggle, which can assume either of two lateral positions by being flipped, and push-button, which can assume either of two alternate conditions by being pushed into its mounting.

The difference between the two verbs in question is that "turn off" describes the action of turning the knob of a rotary switch from the "on" to the "off" position, thereby stopping the flow of electrical current, while "switch off" describes the action of using any...

I am wondering if can do the following with SmartThings.

I have a circulation pump for my tankless water heater. It is currently on a manual timer and runs way more than I'd like. I'd prefer to plug it into a z-wave outlet that is turned on less of the current time but will also turn on when the one of the two bathroom fans is turned on. If the pump was in an off-time-period then it would turn on and off with either of the fans. Can this be done at all? (See sample timeline below for clarification.)

Can I use any z-wave switches on the fans and have the hub trigger the pump outlet when a fan is turned on off, or do I need switches with specific features? (I've read something about the need to poll some switches because they don't send a state change message? That seems sub-optimal.)

Thanks for any guidance/recommendations you can provide. Which reminds me, do you have recommendations for which outlet & switches to use for this?

Here is an example...
